Eighteen Months

As of September 3, 2011, Shelby Kaitlynn is one and half years old. She's such a delight and we are in love with her. She brings so much life and joy to our little family.

Sleep: “Nite-Nite” as Shelby calls it. Shelby loves to sleep. She has always been a great little sleeper. Shelby loves to give everyone hugs and kisses before bed. She even waves and says “bye-bye” as we head up stairs. Once upstairs, we help Shelby brush her teeth. Then, she’s off to her room, where she selects a book to read. We sit on the floor and Shelby crawls into your lap, with her blanket in tow. We usually read one or two stores and then sing a song. All of this is followed by hugs and then a little nite-nite prayer. We lay her in her crib with her two blankets—one to cover up with, the other to hold. She usually starts rubbing her eyes and then she’ll wave bye. On most nights, she’s in bed by 7pm and like her mom, falls asleep pretty quickly. She sleeps through the night great. Shelby wakes up  any time from 7:45-8:15. We are noticing with the morning being darker and a bit colder, she is sleep in more…snug as a bug.

Shelby takes one nap around 12:30 or 1, which last an hour and a half. She lets us know she is awake by fussing, but once we walk in to her room she’s all smiles. She grabs one or all of her blankets as you pick her up. She likes to cuddle or be held as she wakes up.

Shelby favors one end of her crib, the left end. At nap time she usually falls asleep with her feet propped up on the wall. Most the time, she falls asleep on her back and then rolls to her stomach where she tucks her legs up under her (bottom in the air).

Eating: Shelby is a great eater and loves to eat. Honestly, we don't know where she packs away all the food. She would snack all day if we let her. For breakfast, her favorites are waffles, pancakes, oatmeal and always a banana. Lunch is usually a PB&J, nuggets, a hotdog, sandwich meat or pasta with a side of fruit. Carrots, sweet  potatoes fries, mashed potatoes, corn and peas are some of her favorite veggies to munch on. Shelby loves fruit. Strawberry, cantaloupe, red grapes, watermelon, banana and peaches being some of her favorites. Shelby usually has two (sometimes three) snacks throughout the day. She loves munching on raisins, craisins, prunes, honey goldfish, yogurt, cheese, pretzel rods, and nutri-grain bars (really just about anything). Shelby enjoys most meats, but like her brother, isn’t crazy about grilled or baked chicken. It’s a textured thing.

Shelby uses a spoon and fork quit well when eating. Currently, we're working on drinking from a cup. She still loves her milk and usually drinks water or sugar-free kool-aid  (which is diluted with water) at snack time.

Playing: Shelby loves playing with her baby, reading books, coloring, playing with the farm animals and barn, throwing and kicking a ball, and of course stickers. Shelby loves the great outdoors. She likes to run, to play with balls, to dig in the dirt, to ride her Winnie the Pooh push toy and to draw with the chalk. Anything water is an insist winner with Shelby. Shelby loves to run and dance about. She's so stinking cute when she runs too. Sometimes, she puts her arms back and leans forward as she takes off to run around. Just recently, Shelby has really become interested in soccer (probably due to watching Levi's soccer practices). She can dribble pretty well and is very proud of herself when she does the soccer stance (standing still and putting one foot up on the soccer ball).

Talking: Shelby had a word explosion around the end of 16 months. She has such a sweet little voice and loves to chat it up. Just recently she started saying Levi—so sweet! Up until then, she referred to Levi as brother. She signs, more, drink and eat…all of which are personalized signs by Shelby. Shelby has also been experimenting with her voice by making roaring noises, screaming and talking baby babble. Recently, she has learned more farm animal sounds, so now she moo's, baaa’s, and oink’s. Of the animal noises, I’d say, barking is still her favorite. When she sees other animals (in a book, on TV or while we’re out) Shelby usually barks and points in excitement. Shelby likes to sing too. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Jesus loves me, Quack Quack went the Little Duck, and The Alphabet song are among her favorites.

Some of the words in Shelby’s vocabulary are: up, down, baby, ball, truck, out, milk, dog, strawberry, eat, cow, shoes, brother, sock, shirt, bath, bubbles, burette, nite-nite, bye-bye, hi, bed, kitty, wa-wa (water), mail, bike, book, car, color, sorry, sticker…

Personality: We’ve enjoyed watching Shelby’s little personality bloom over the past few months. She has become so much more social with others while we're out. Shelby loves to wave hello and bye bye to everyone at the store. She is still an observer at heart. She’s quite, but bold and determine. She’s sweet, loves to hug and cuddle, and laugh. Shelby is affection with others, especially with her brother. She’s quick to respond with a hug or “pat-pat” when someone is sad or hurt. Shelby is cautious of new people and settings. Usually reassuring her builds her confidence quickly and she's ready to try anything out. She’s pretty determined about what she wants and when she wants it. At times, when being told “no” she will cry or lay on the floor and fuss. Shelby is pretty sensitive and tender-hearted.  She’s a great little helper—always ready to help clean or pick up.  She loves to dance around, sing, and laugh. Shelby is just a beam of light!

Brotherly Love: Shelby  loves her big brother very much. She’s constantly watching and trying to do EVERYTHING he is doing. For the most part, they play very well together and are very caring towards one another. They enjoy having shouting matches in the car, playing the tickle game at night and just being silly with one another.
